Gone to the Dogs

The Paw Patrol worked full time this week.

Balto is off to a slow start on his diet but, he has started.

Look at my boy.  Here's his before picture.  "After" picture to follow in a few months....

I just thought this was a funny picture.

Scott + Blossom = True Love

She always has to be touching him.

Friday, we saw Dr. Russell Quigley, a neurologist, at Carolina Veterinary Specialists.  We received the news that we didn't want to hear.  Blossom most likely has Degenerative Myelopathy or, DM.  Dr. Quigley informed Scott that we probably have around "a year".  It's hard to believe that she will become paralyzed over the course of the year as, she is getting around pretty close to normal right now.

Blossom had an MRI so they needed to give her general anesthesia.  To do so, they had to shave her arm in in one spot. You can see how spotted Blossom's skin is under her hair.  She is like this all over.

It took her a while to recover from anesthesia.  She didn't eat until late Friday night and until then, you could hear her stomach churning.  Poor baby.  She is back to "normal" once again.

The next step is that we meet with a veterinarian at a rehab facility on Wednesday.  The appointment is an hour and a half.  Blossom will receive another physical and neurological evaluation.  She will then be given a therapy plan.  This is not to "cure" her of DM but, to prolong the amount of quality time she has where she can walk on her own.  She will almost certainly receive hydrotherapy in the form of an underwater treadmill.  We were also told she will probably begin laser therapy and electro-acupuncture.

Here are more random pictures that I took because, I can't stop taking pictures of her.  Since I know she won't be able to stand on her own for much longer, I want to document everything I can!

I took Daniel to a pool party tonight for the children's department at church.   He had a great time.  Tomorrow he starts 4th grade.

Daniel is the kid snorkeling.

Eating pizza.

I feel terrible.  Daniel did his first underwater flip today.  I promised him I would take a video of it.  He wanted the video to be so good that he did 3 flips in a row.  When I got home I realized that due to operator error (me), there is no video. Oops.  He was so proud.  Maybe he will forget about the video.

Mom finished physical therapy for her arm on Thursday.  She is doing much better however, she still has a long way to go.  Her arm is still a little swollen and her strength isn't near 100%.

Tonight we took Blossom and Balto on a long walk around the neighborhood across the street.  It's the simple joys in life that are so amazing.

Saturday, I picked up Mom to take her to get her hair "done".  Can you see the cat?  Mom said that later in the day, she heard a noise at her back door.  It was the cat bringing her a live bird.  Mom opened the door and popped the cat on the head.  The cat dropped the bird and the bird flew away!

See the cat?  If not, let me help you...

Have a great week everyone!

  1. Poor Blossom! It sounds like she has a bumpy road ahead. I hope the vet comes up with a therapy solution that keeps her going for a good while longer. Glad to hear you mother has finished physical therapy. Regaining strength takes time and exercise. I hope Aunt Julie will take lots of video of Daniel's backflips going forward. It won't completely make up for missing the all important first flip but it might make him forget a little. What happens to the cat when you activate the garage door?
