I was raised on Soap Operas. I have to be clear, this was not my mother's choice. To this day, she still frowns upon my soaps and all of the sinning that goes on. Growing up, I lived next door to my Grandmother. Grandma watched all of the CBS soaps and since I spent a lot of time with her, I did too. So many of those characters feel like family to me.
The Young & the Restless' Victor and Nikki Newman in 1984. They are currently married...again.
Over the years we've lost many soaps and I personally miss As the World Turns and Guiding Light. With amazing runs of over 50 years each, you felt like you knew the characters personally. I mean, we watched them age in real time.
Every day, my boss and I watch The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful. At first, he used to make fun of me for watching them. Now, he can't miss an episode. His wife told me that he even had to watch them when he was in the hospital earlier this year.
For no reason at all, here are 10 things I have learned from watching soap operas.
1. Children grow up fast on soap operas.
I think they age in dog years or something.
2. You can never be certain that someone is dead.
Oh, so you didn't die in that explosion and a family of bears has been taking care of you in their den for the past 4 years?
3. You can never have too many marriages.
Brooke Logan just had her 13th wedding this week.
4. You can never marry the same person too many times.
And...in that 13th wedding this week Brooke married Ridge Forrester for the 6th time.
That's Carter in the background. Not only is the only attorney at Forrester Creations, he officiates every ceremony in Los Angeles while secretly being in love with Maya Forrester who, once a man, is now a woman.
5. It is perfectly acceptable to sleep with every member of the same family.
Steffy Spencer had to have a paternity test to make sure the baby she is carrying is her husband's and not his father's. Interestingly, she slept with him the week before Christmas and we already have the answers to the paternity test and know the sex of the baby. I'm pretty sure her daughter will be married to an uncle in a few months.
6. A lot of people have twins they never knew about.
You were unconscious when you gave birth to your child and someone stole the twin you never knew you carried?
7. Everyone hangs out at the same 3 places.
Out of all of the restaurants in Los Angeles, how come the Forrester & Spencer families only eat at the same Italian restaurant? Don't even get me started on Genoa City.
8. The hospital makes a lot of mistakes.
Security is terrible in soap opera hospitals.
9. Young children are never with their parents.
Can someone please tell me who is keeping the children while the parents are hanging out?
10. People get amnesia a lot AND make full recoveries.
This is not medically correct on either count.
BONUS - #11. Your can never be too sure who your real parents are.
I've seen Maury. Apparently this does happen outside of soap operas as well.
Being the writer for a soap must be AWESOME! I would love to sit around and think up storylines like these. Soap Operas are Awfully Fantastic!
I sort of grew up on CBS soaps, unwittingly, as my Mother watched them. But eventually I broke free. It can be done, Julie. Just put your mind to it and do it. ;)
