Hunkered Down

Saturday, September 15, 2018

We are hunkered down here and waiting for the "Biblical" rains.  My gosh, if they really were Biblical rains then I guess that would mean rain for 40 days and 40 nights.  I think we are expecting 2 days and 2 nights at most.  That will be a record here either way.

Every time there is a hurricane in the area the meteorologists keep telling us to "Batten down the hatches" and "Hunker down".  If you wanted to play a drinking game, those would be the words to listen for.  Here is a picture of Scott battening down our hatches.  When they were building our house, our basement flooded.  Scott didn't want to take that chance again.

He also gave our willow quite the haircut.  And....he tied that sucker down.  He also ran a drain extension from the rain gutter.

The kids were out of school yesterday so they made a trip to Target for the necessities.  Daniel bought a pumpkin shaped light.  He was excited to show it to Fuzzy.

We were supposed to go to Holden Beach tomorrow for a family vacation.  Clearly, that is not happening.  Holden Beach is about 30 minutes south of Wilmington, NC where the eye of Hurricane Florence came ashore.  Unfortunately, we didn't buy vacation insurance and I think we are paying to rent a house that may or may not still be there.  Either way, the bridge to get to Holden Beach is closed so we couldn't have gone anyway.

Rana was supposed to fly to Rome this morning for the first leg of her trip home to Damascus, Syria.  She changed her flight because she didn't want to leave her family by themselves during the storm.  I will keep you posted on how we manage during the storm.

Soon hurricane season will be over and eventually winter will be here...

  1. Glad to hear you prepared for the worst. From what I hear Florence has already been downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm, so the worst has probably passed. I just hope you don't have too much water and wind damage to clean up after.

    1. The problem is she is moving at 2mph. Seriously, 2mph. She is dumping record amounts of rain and she won't leave. This is just ridiculous.
