Christy's Big Night

Thursday, January 10, 2019

My grandmother Helms was born in 1897 (some records say 1896 but, she said 1897).  I grew up next door to Grandma and spent many, many days at her house while my parents were at work.  Anyone who knew my grandmother knew not to bother her between the hours of 12:30 pm and 4:00 pm because she was in her chair watching CBS soap operas.

We watched:
The Young and the Restless
Capitol (later switched to The Bold and the Beautiful)
As the World Turns
Guiding Light

I grew up with these shows, these families....as far as I was concerned, they were my family too!  If you read my blog, you know that my boss and I spend our lunch break every day watching The Young and the Restless AND The Bold and the Beautiful.  Many of the same actors that my grandmother knew are still on the shows today.

Enter Christy.  Growing up, Christy always watched CBS shows (sometimes with her grandmother and sometimes on the phone for hours with me) until 3:00 pm when she then switched over to General Hospital.  She still watches General Hospital to this very day.    She loves to go to fan meet and greets and was super excited to go see General Hospital actors Steve Burton and Bradford Anderson with 3 of her coworkers.  Tuesday afternoon, I got a call from a sad Christy, that none of her work friends were able to make the show.  Being that it was Christy, I stepped in.

The Comedy Zone was packed full of middle aged women who were screaming like teenage girls.  Since the show was about General Hospital, I had no idea what the actors were speaking about.  I did, however,  enjoy a really great meal and a nice evening out with a great friend.

When it came time to get our picture made with the actors, I said, "I want her (Christy) in my picture".  The actor on the left (Bradford Anderson) said, "Why?  Do you not watch the show?"  I said, "No, I actually don't".  The actor on the right, Steve Burton, seemed genuinely concerned about whether or not someone who was not a fan of General Hospital would have a good time at their show.    He asked me if I laughed.  Both gentlemen were so very sweet and kind to me even though I admitted I was not a fan.  I even told Steve that I watch The Young and the Restless.  In 2013 he took a 4 year break from GH and was a character on Y&R during that time.  At present, his character has disappeared into the Witness Protection Program because he is in danger from his time as an undercover drug cop.  Oh...soap operas!

Here's a photo of Daniel saying the blessing last night at my parents' house.

I wasn't eating with everyone so Jesus didn't mind me taking a picture during the prayer.   - LOL

Daniel has a light bulb with him .... of course.

  1. That was sweet of you to accompany Christy. So cool that your good deed was rewarded by a photo with the actors. My mother used to watch all the same soaps as your grandma. Despite seeing them on occasion when I was home from school or work, I never got addicted to them.
